Twice in the past month, on stops at older Old Town Scottsdale properties, our water test told the same story: free chlorine near zero by Friday, an owner dosing faithfully every weekend, and a stabilizer reading north of 120 ppm. Neither owner had ever heard of cyanuric acid. Both had been adding it for years — every time they dropped a tablet in the floater. Of all the numbers on a test kit, this is the one that quietly decides whether the chlorine you keep buying is doing anything at all.
What the stabilizer actually does
Cyanuric acid — CYA on a test report, “conditioner” or “stabilizer” on the store shelf — is sunscreen for chlorine. Desert sun is brutal on unprotected chlorine: in direct summer light, an unstabilized pool can lose most of its free chlorine in a single afternoon. CYA bonds loosely to chlorine in the water, shielding it from UV and releasing it as it is needed for sanitizing. The CDC’s healthy swimming guidance is built on the assumption that chlorine is actually present and active — and in Arizona, without stabilizer, it often is not.
The catch is that the shield works both ways. At the right level, CYA protects chlorine while leaving enough of it free to kill algae and bacteria. Push the level too high and the bond gets too crowded — the test kit says chlorine is present, but too little of it is available to do work. The ranges we aim for on our routes: 50–70 ppm for a traditional chlorine pool, 70–80 ppm for a salt pool. Below about 30, the sun wins. Above about 100, the water is running on a fraction of the sanitizing power the numbers suggest.

Where it comes from — and why it never leaves on its own
Almost nobody sets out to overdose stabilizer. It arrives as a passenger:
- Trichlor tablets. The everyday puck is roughly half CYA by weight. For every 10 ppm of chlorine the tablets deliver over time, they leave about 6 ppm of stabilizer behind — permanently.
- Dichlor granular shock. Worse, gram for gram: 10 ppm of chlorine from dichlor leaves roughly 9 ppm of CYA in the water.
- Startup conditioner. The deliberate dose added after a plaster job or refill — correct and necessary, but it counts toward the same total.
Here is the part that makes the desert different. Chlorine gets used up. Water evaporates — a Scottsdale-area pool loses several feet of it in a year. Stabilizer does neither. When water evaporates, CYA stays behind in what remains, and the fresh fill water you top off with does not remove a single ppm of it. In wetter climates, rain overflow and heavy splash-out slowly bleed stabilizer off. Here, the only things that meaningfully remove it are backwashing, splash-out, and draining. A tablet-fed pool in the North Valley can drift up 30–40 ppm in a single season without the owner touching a bottle of conditioner.
Too low and too high look almost identical from the deck
This is why CYA problems hide so well. Both failure modes show up as the same complaint: chlorine that will not hold, and algae pressure that keeps returning no matter how much product goes in.
Low stabilizer is the pattern we see after a replaster, a drain-and-refill, or a season of liquid-chlorine-only dosing. The pool tests fine at 7 a.m. and is stripped bare by 4 p.m. — the chlorine is being destroyed by UV, not consumed by contamination. The fix is cheap and quick: raise CYA into range, deliberately, and re-test.
High stabilizer is sneakier because every individual reading looks plausible. Chlorine shows on the strip. The water may even look decent. But the pool behaves like it is under-chlorinated — dull water, algae in the shady corners, a green tinge after every hot weekend. On those two Old Town Scottsdale pools, both original builds from the neighborhood’s mid-century era with decades of tablet feeding behind them, the owners had been escalating: more tablets, more shock, more frustration. Every added tablet pushed the stabilizer higher and made the underlying problem worse.
Testing it honestly
Test strips are at their weakest on this exact number. They are hard to read above 80 ppm and below 30 ppm — the two zones where all the trouble lives. The test we trust is the turbidity type: a reagent clouds the sample, and you fill a tube until a black dot at the bottom disappears. It is a slightly awkward test to run, which is probably why it gets skipped, but it produces a number you can act on. One practical note — most turbidity kits top out at 100 ppm. If your reading pins at the top of the scale, mix a sample of half pool water and half tap water, run it again, and double the result. Industry standards from the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance treat stabilizer as a core balance parameter, not an optional extra, and that is how it deserves to be tested: monthly in season, and always after a refill.
Bringing a high number down
There is no consumer-scale chemical that removes cyanuric acid from pool water. Products are marketed for it; we have yet to watch one move the number in a way that justifies the cost. What actually works is water replacement, done in a controlled way:
- Confirm the reading with a turbidity test — including the dilution step if the first run pins at 100.
- Calculate the replacement fraction. Dilution is proportional: at 150 ppm, getting to 60 means replacing roughly 60% of the water, usually across more than one session.
- Drain in stages — about a third at a time — refilling and re-testing between rounds rather than trusting the math alone.
- Switch chlorine sources so the number stays down. Liquid chlorine adds zero CYA.
In the Valley there is also a no-drain option worth knowing about: mobile reverse-osmosis filtration, which processes the pool’s existing water and strips CYA, calcium, and dissolved solids without a full water swap. For pools where draining is risky or water restrictions make a refill unattractive, it can be the better tool.
Red flag — draining a pool in an Arizona summer: a drained or half-drained shell is vulnerable. Hydrostatic groundwater pressure can lift a pool out of the ground, and exposed plaster can be permanently damaged by an afternoon of 110° sun. There are also municipal rules about where drain water can go. If your plan involves removing more than about a third of the water, have a licensed pool professional stage the work.
Keeping it in range for the rest of the summer
Managing stabilizer is mostly about knowing what each product you add carries with it. Liquid chlorine carries nothing. Tablets are convenient — there is no shame in a floater running while you travel — but they should be a choice made with the CYA number in view, not the default forever. Dose conditioner itself only on purpose, only after a test, and re-test before adding more, because you can always add stabilizer but you can never chemically subtract it.

Stabilizer FAQs
Is cyanuric acid the same thing as the “conditioner” the pool store sold me?
Yes. Conditioner, stabilizer, and CYA are all the same chemical. It is also built into trichlor tablets and dichlor shock, which is why many owners add it for years without ever buying a bottle labeled stabilizer.
How often should CYA be tested in an Arizona pool?
Monthly during swim season, plus once after any refill or major water addition. A weekly service that only checks chlorine and pH can miss a slow CYA climb, so make sure whoever tests your water includes stabilizer at least every few visits.
Do salt pools need cyanuric acid too?
Yes — arguably more than tablet pools. A salt cell generates chlorine in a slow trickle, and without roughly 70–80 ppm of stabilizer the desert sun destroys that trickle almost as fast as the cell produces it, forcing the cell to run harder and age faster.
Will monsoon rain dilute my CYA?
Rarely enough to matter. Even a strong storm adds an inch or two of water, and meaningful dilution requires replacing a third of the pool’s volume. Rain helps at the margin; it is not a management plan for high stabilizer.
Can I keep using trichlor tablets if my CYA is already high?
We would not. Every tablet raises stabilizer further and deepens the problem. Switch to liquid chlorine, which adds no CYA, until levels are back in range after a partial drain — then decide deliberately whether tablets fit your pool going forward.
